Diamond Pet Foods, Etc. Recalls – 2012

Dry dog food manufactured in Diamond Pet Foods’ Gaston, South Carolina production plant has been linked to at least 15 cases of Salmonella Infantis infections in 9 states, according to a May 11, 2012 report from CDC. Confirmed outbreak cases have been documented in Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (2), and Virginia (1). Five people were hospitalized.

Two Canadians – one in Nova Scotia and the other in Quebec – also were reported by the Public Health Agency of Canada to be victims of this outbreak (as of May 18th).

On May 18, 2012, Diamond Pet Foods expanded its earlier recalls to include Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula (samples, 6-lb and 18-lb bags; Manufactured Aug 26, 2011).

Diamond Pet Foods had previously recalled nine brands of dry pet food formulas that were manufactured in Gaston. All batches manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 are affected.

  • People who think they might have become ill after contact with dry pet food or with an animal that has eaten dry pet food should consult their health care providers. Infants, older adults, and persons with impaired immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe illness.
  • People who think their animal might have become ill after eating dry pet food should consult their veterinary-care providers.
  • Read Additional Information for Pet Owners to learn the signs and symptoms of salmonellosis in dogs and cats, and to understand how to deal with possible Salmonella illness in your pet.

Also, be aware that dogs may be infected with Salmonella – and may shed the bacteria in their stool – without showing any outward symptoms of illness. If your pet has consumed a Diamond Pet Foods dry dog food, be especially careful to wash your hands after handling it, and supervise closely any interaction between children and your pet.

  2. I have not heard of any recalls on Infinia and have switched to it. It is my understanding the PMI is moving its production out of Diamond facilities so there may be some issues with product availablilty until they get things straightened out.

  3. Misty will survive. UC Davis tested the Taste of the Wild dog food for us. The toxicology results from UC Davis for liver toxin and Salmonella came back negative. Unless the CDC discovers something else in the dog food our batch came out clean and we will never know what caused her liver to fail. ALT was over 1000 and is now down to 273. We can eliminate toadstools, antifreeze, rat poison and everything that causes this. The blogospheres have case after case where dogs are getting sick and dying and the only common denominator is the dog food manufacturer.

    Because we can’t identify the cause we will forever have this hanging over us.

    2. Thank you for the update, Tiffany. Unfortunately, finding Salmonella in a bag of dog food is very much a game of Russian Roulette. A “negative” simply means that the (usually) 25gram sample that was tested did not contain Salmonella. It is not distributed uniformly through the contents of a bag.

      I’m sure that everyone reading your update shares your relief that Misty is recovering.

  6. I fed 4Health to my 4 collies this Winter and Spring. In March, 3 of them got sick. One died. The 2 girls were seniors. They got better after I started feeding them Fromm and then Earthborn. I can’t stress strongly enough how much Earthborn and Fromm helped my girls get better. If you need to run for cover to a new feed, run to one of these 2 brands.
    I went to Diamond and talked to their vet about the issues with my dogs. I was told that they were getting reports of all kinds of people with dogs dying from pinworms, etc. which folks claimed were due to the Diamond dog food. I was told that unless I had a signed note form my vet stating that a test proved the dog died from salmonella, that they would not recognize any issues with my collies. I was stunned. I did take a poop sample to my vet, but since it was so obvious what was killing my collie, the vet didn’t see the need to do the test. What regret I have over that.
    Even the fact that we bred collies for 15 years didn’t sway the Diamond vet. Everything I said was “not an offical stat” because the vet test wasn’t done. Do not throw out the food! Double bag it like the biohazard it is and get with Diamond and your vet. The CDC has the genetic DNA fingerprint of this rare strain of Salmonella infantis. Once diagnosed it is easy to trace it back to Diamond,which the CDC has already done for us. When you send a sample to Diamond, DO NOT send them ALL of it. Keep a sample securely away from contact by living things in case your sample gets “lost”. Send a sample to FDA and CDC too. Until you get results, keep a small sample secure at your residence. Wash any part of you that might come in contact with it with disinfectant. be very careful handling this food and anything it touches. use disinfectants .
    Interestingly, Tractor Supply has a different recall venue and I wish I had organized my 4Health reciepts. From what I read, if you have the reciept, you can bring it to the store for a refund. Now Diamond states this food was recalled from Fall 2011 thru April 2012. So, if we have reciepts for all the food we purchased from then to now, can we take the reciepts into Tractor Supply and get refunds for all those bags we bought? If so, that will help pay for some vets bills. Tho it won’t bring back our beloved deceased pets. I didn’t know 4health was made by Diamond or I never would have fed it. Later I found out the only ID was a tiny DPF on the 4Health bag. DPF=Dianond Pet Food”. I have read the offical May 8 inspection report and it is horrifying. Among the issues, chipped mixing paddles encrusted with food residue and an employee caught stirring the animal fat with his bare hand.

  8. All of the foods sitting on my vet’s shelf contain corn, corn gluten, corn by-product, etc. These are also within the first 3 ingredients listed, which is not a good sign.

    Also just found out today that most dog foods are manufactured by Diamond, even Purina. Purina has stated that they will have inventory issues because they will move all their brands out of Diamond plants. They have a grain free food under their Exclusive brand called Infinia.

    Anyone with information on that product?

    1. I spoke today to a person at PMI Nutrition about their Exclusive food. It is made by Diamond in Missouri and also by Pro Pet. She stated they have no re-calls. Also mentioned Infinia grain free made in the same location. Information on both foods can be found at PMI Nutrition.com.

      2. Does anyone know if Infinia Salmon and Sweet Potato Grainfree
        Zen dog food has been recalled? I’ve called PMI Nutrition but have not been called back. Our dog food was manufactured in
        Brentwood, Missouri. Is that the same as Meta, Missouri? My Rottweiler has been on this food for the past year and half. He has been fine with it. Yesterday he vomited twice. That is why I am concerned. Thank you.

        1. I have not heard of any recall, but Brentwood, MO and Meta, MO are about 125 miles apart, according to Google Maps. Brentwood is a suburb of St. Louis, the home of Nestle Purina.

  10. I guess the question we have to start asking, when purchasing food for our pets, is where the product is manufactered. The name on the bag or the can means nothing.

    I have looked at foods from my vet, but they contain corn. I do not feed corn to any of my animals. I have one dog that can’t tolerate it, and we can’t tolerate being around her when she eats it.

    It really is the name game that is frustrating here.

    I have gone back to purina corn and wheat free dry food. I am supplementing with rice and stock that I cook myself. More because this is how I got them to stop vomiting, and also because they like something warm added to their meal. I have some issues with purina, but feel better now that they offer brands without corn as a main ingrediant. They do a lot of things wrong, but they have also been in the business of feeding animals for a long time. Much better than a bunch of hacks that are holding their equipment together with duct tape and card board.

    1. I have a call into Diamond’s media phone line since yesterday. I don’t think the company released a complete production code, which would have shown the plant location. Have you seen anything other than the company’s recall notice to indicate that it related to a different plant?

  12. all 3 of my labs became ill from eating diamond pet food (kirkland). i’ve contacted them a zillion times but because no human has salmonella and because my dogs didn’t get salmonella, diamond is choosing to ignore me. i’ve been on cbs news (yup, they responded in 4 hours) but to no avail.
    within about a 7 week period we had diarrhea, vomitting, and bloody stool. all 3 had a series of tests (poop, blood, X-ray etc) and diamond will no longer return my emails or calls. i leave voice messages to the “head ” vet as i spoke to the 2 other vets who do not want to hear a thing about this because no one tested positive for salmonella. by the time my third lab got sick WE KNEW IT WAS THE FOOD.the vet agreed.
    i am at a loss at what further to do.

    1. Did you and your vet report this case to the FDA? Have you reported it to your state’s Consumer Complaint Coordinator?

      Diamond told me that to file a claim a pet must have tested positive for Salmonella. The private label brands may have a more flexible criteria.

      But, that still doesn’t prevent you and your vet from reporting this to the government, which you must do.

  14. Can anyone tell me how many other manufacturing plants operate under Diamond Foods…I feel certain that the plant in South Carolina is not the only one.

    I returned a bag of Wellness to Petsmart. It is not on the recall list, but I had a dog vomiting, and I stopped feeding her the dogfood and started feeding her protein and rice that I had prepared myself. She immediately stopped vomiting. They took the food back, and with my receipt gave me my money.

    When asked why I was making the return, I explained everything above. I also explained how I would never have spent $60 on a bag of food if I had known it was made in a Diamond Dog Food plant. Diamond Dog food is a low end food that is sold in local feed stores. I would never purchase it. The manager at Petsmart actually tried to tell me that all of these brands are owned by different companies, but are only produced in the same plant.

    Are you kidding me? I asked her if she really meant to say that to me?

    They may be labeled as different brands, but they are made in the same facility, on the same equipment, with the same employees that are making the same mistakes over and over. They don’t shut the place down and clean it from top to bottom between brands. And at the end of the day, they are all laughing all the way to the bank. Petsmart is right along with them.

    This is not my first recall with a food sold at Petsmart. I had all three of my dogs vomiting when I was feeding Blue Wilderness. all of this happened at the same time they had inventory issues at Petsmart. The large bags of food were not available and we were being told that the manufacturing plant was having issues with packaging. After finally contacting the manufacturer, I was informed of a “voluntary recall” due to too much vitamin D in the dogfood.

    Petsmart knew this and only reported packaging problems.

    Blue Buffalo knew this and only posted it on their website.

    The whole thing is ridiculous.

    1. According to the company’s web site, Diamond has three plants – one in South Carolina, one in Missouri and one in Northern California. The pet food produced in South Carolina has the letter “X” in the production code.

        I use Science Diet directly from sterile veterinarian’s offices as a result of the Petsmart info published at the time about inventory. The lab I was fostering was over age ten & I knew her system couldn’t recover from any excuse for error with her food. She regularly ate two types of Science. She lived to be 13!

        The cat here gets Science Diet from veterinarian (the cans of A/D which is only available at veterinarians) and Tractor Supply now carries several of the Science Diet products. I find their stores clean & in spring enjoy visiting the tubs of poultry babies for sale. The Science Diet I get at TSC is either in plastic bags or a can. I get the Feline Pine clumping cat litter there & at Food Lion Grocery.

        Wonder why the SC plant of Diamond has an X on products…

        A few years ago my Siamese cat ate a little of the tainted Iams food. I’m careful about giving canned food so she hadn’t eaten much. She lived a few years, but clearly she wasn’t the same. I changed her food to Science Diet.

        Veterinarian has reminded me on occasion that Science Diet isn’t involved in any of the pet food recalls. There is definitely a reason for that, I believe!

        1. If all you are feeding the cat is Science Diet A/D then you are exposing her to potential vitamin A poisoning and other vitamin imbalances. The can specifically states that it is not for long term use. BTW Science Diet has also been involved in recalls… Not the prescription diets like A/D but other Science Diet canned food have…

      I am not surprised to hear what the manager of the store said. Even at the independent natural pet food stores where I shop I usually know more than the employees. It takes a lot of research on my part and following the wonderful bloggers like Phyllis to have that info. It should not be that hard for a store manager to have access to accurate information.
      I just had a chain natural pet store (Mud Bay) employee show me Dogswell’s information on why their Chinese made jerky treats are safe. Apparently white lab coats are effective in fooling people into thinking it must be safe. Sounds like Diamonds 150 checks quality and safety program to me.

  15. Also, DIAMOND is claiming on their web site that they have had no reports of animal deaths (as of their info on the website yesterday). So, People you need to report this to them and make a stand! This is ridiculous, it is great that they admitted there was a problem, but they need to be held accountable. go to DIAMONDPETRECALL.COM and Contact them with your veterinarian’s info and advise them there was death.

  16. This is the Diamond Cat Food too. I had to put my cat to sleep due to severe liver failure about 3-4 weeks ago, she was about 15yrs old, and I did not know about the recall at that point, because it was not really advertised and no one mentioned the cat food. I do animal rescue, mostly large breed dogs and cats. I have been feeding Diamond, Premium Edge to the dogs and Diamond Maintenance to the cats for about 12-15yrs. Never had a problem, even through the last 2 recalls. My dogs are fine, that was who I was watching for signs in. Now all of my cats, there are 10 in my house, have severe diarrhea and vomitting. I have a 20yr old cat, that I have had since a baby, that is part of my family, that I now have to take to the vet today, and more than likely put to sleep, due to complications. Unless my vet can perform a miracle. I was not aware of the Cat food recall until, I looked into it when all my cats started getting ill and my 20yr old started loosing a lot of weight and peeing uncontrolably everywhere. That is when I found out about the cat food recall. I am highly irate. I called Diamond, they gave the info to the website and told me to fill out the info for a certificate for a free bag of food. (because I do not have the original bag, I put all the food in bins). Then told me to discard the bad food. Told me she was sorry to hear about the problems with my cat. THAT WAS IT!!! I went to the store I bought the food at, which incidentally I used to work at (over 10yrs ago), it is a smaller store, but is owned a company that is the distribution center for most of the United States for a lot of of Pet Supplies. I asked if anyone had reported a problem with the cat food. I was told no, other than cats having diarrhea and vomitting, WELL NEWSFLASH, in an older or sick animal this can lead to other complications, like DEATH!!!! I want to know, why this food was not pulled off the shelves when they found it was bad??? I spend hundreds of dollars a month in the store that I go to, and I know everyone in there, I am very disgruntled about this. I can’t afford these crazy vet bills, I am a private rescue. (meaning I do not get donations or am a 501c) I worked in local law enforcement for 10yrs and when animals needed somewhere to go, I would take them in and find homes for them. The older ones or sick ones, I usually let them live out their lives here. I now am a housewife, looking for work (hubby did not realize when I retired, how much money goes into the animals every month) and cannot afford these unexpected vet bills. Just to put my cat to sleep today, will bet at least $140. I am saving the bad cat food and hopefully my vet and I can get it tested, somehow. There is on the website an area for you to contact Diamond and actually explain your situation and give your vets name, etc. DIAMONPETRECALL.COM and go to CONTACT. I plan to see what my vet says today and go from there. If I can prove it was the cat food, and my veterinarian is willing to go to bat for me, I am going to get satisfaction from this. I have lost now 2 family members and pretty much have to buy new living room furnature and will have a very hefty vet bill to take care of, (if vet decides I need to bring in all 10 cats). GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

  18. I am pissed!!! To say the least!!! Solid Gold!! I pay a lot of $ for your premium Wolf Pack Dog food !!!! I am a reasonable person , but I feel that your company has been very shady!!! You do not state anywhere that your dog food is manufactured by another company!!! I am very disappointed and done with your company for good!!! Good riddance !!!! I am aware that these things can happen, but your company has not been up front with your pet food line as far as where it is produced!!! You should be ashamed of your company … Everything that you have stated that your company stands for is false….. I am very sad for all the animal owners out there including myself that really believed your company was different from the rest!!! Shame on you all!!! You guys should consume your high priced premium food and feel the pain you have caused!!! I am disgusted …

  19. Just a comment on your note about food distribution in Canada. You have written:” … and in all Canadian provinces and territories through on-line retailers.”

    The way distribution works for the prairie provinces is that the food is shipped ot major distribution centres in Ontario, BC and Quebec, but then, those distrubutors send them to the prairie provinces from there. Pet Valu’s central warehouse is Peton in Ontario, Best West also ships from Ontario to the prairies (Saskatchewan, Manitoba) and Alberta usually receives shipments from BC main distributors. Therefore, even if the product was not purchased through online retailers, it WILL be in local pet food stores on the shelves. My tainted TOTW cat food was purchased at a local store in Manitoba. Not from an online retailer. I just want to stress that EVERYONE needs to check their food regardless of how and where they got it.

  21. Hi I am Harriet Christianson and we have a big problem. we were feeding our dogs, my daughters dog and My dog diamond pet food. Tammy’s dog is really sick since we fed him this food and 3 days ago my dog died after feeding her that food. they were both fine before eating that food. please respond to us and see if there is something we can do to protect our other 2 dogs. Thankyou. I have quit feeding the Diamond food.

    1. Harriet, you need to take your other two dogs to the veterinarian immediately. If you have any of the Diamond dog food left over, either you or your veterinarian should contact FDA and arrange to have the food tested.

      My name is kimberly and I too have had a beloved pet die of this . My dog’s name is SIMON he was a 11 yr. old pit. My son’s 2yr old bull dog also was sick. We caught the 2yr old in time, he is doing much better after antibiotics. His name is Killian, and has much weight to gain back.
      Simon had died less than a week before I heard of the recall, and we stopped using the food with killian, and treated him for this illness.I’m in the process of demanding diamond pet, and tractor supply com for remembustment of my loss of Simon, and over $1000.00 of vet bills. They are trying to deny any of this dog food was effected. I believe that all of us that have felt the heart breaking loss of our pets being MURDERED by their neglect of quality control need to unite and form a class action lawsuit. I

    3. Hi, my name is Kjell and I too have lost pets, going to be 2 today, unless my vet can perform a miracle. You need to report your loss, Diamond on their press releases is stating they have no reports of animal deaths from this. If my vet today can verify that this is due to salmonella from the food, I will be contacting DIAMOND and possibly seeking legal counsel. Anyone know an attorney that deals with negligent animal deaths???? I worked in law for many years, but I do not know any attorneys that do this type of work, nor do I have a lot of money.
